The link above has a trailer of the DVD so you can get an idea of what the $20 DVD has to offer. It is NOT a documentary on diabetes; nor is it about avoiding the disease altogether. The main idea of the video is to offer tips on managing Type Two Diabetes so you can avoid some of the more serious problems like kidney damage, vision loss and nerve damage.

Most of the content is common sense like “eat a healthy diet” and “learn all you can about the disease” but there are also some more in-depth advice that teaches you how to do things like examine your feet for sores or blisters.

For many of Americans it is simply too late to avoid getting Type Two Diabetes but we can all continue to learn every day about ways to live with, manage and treat the disease so we don’t end up with a severely diminished quality of life as a result.

An overweight America may be fixated on fat and obsessed with complex carbohydrates, but nutritionists say the real problem is much sweeter we’re awash in sugar. Not just any sugar, but high fructose corn syrup.

The country eats more sweetener made from corn than from sugarcane or beets, gulping it down in drinks as well as in frozen food and baked goods. Even ketchup is laced with it.

Almost all nutritionists finger high fructose corn syrup consumption as a major culprit in the nation’s obesity crisis. The inexpensive sweetener flooded the American food supply in the early 1980s, just about the time the nation’s obesity rate started its unprecedented climb.

The question is why did it make us so fat?

In the past, fructose was considered beneficial to diabetics because it is absorbed only 40 percent as quickly as glucose and causes only a modest rise in blood sugar. However, research on other hormonal factors suggests that fructose actually promotes disease more readily than glucose. Glucose is metabolized in every cell in the body but all fructose must be metabolized in the liver. Any of the best glucose meters can tell you that.

The livers of test animals fed large amounts of fructose develop fatty deposits and cirrhosis, similar to problems that develop in the livers of alcoholics.

TheHolisticOption.com created this anti-High Fructose Corn Syrup commercial to depict the high-fructose corn syrup debate from a different angle.

While this video is GREAT!! It’s not airing on TV in the form of a commercial. It was created by The Holistic Option group and is found on their website and youtube. I hope it would be released to national TV, but unfortunately I also know that money talks in this world and I’m sure the Holisitc Option doesn’t have near the funds that the National Corn Refiners Association does. It was created to counter the commercial of the most recent Corn Refiners Association (CRA) TV ad:

Take a moment to reflect

Whatever you are doing on World Diabetes Day, take just a moment to consider the facts behind the campaign:

Every 10 seconds a person dies from diabetes-related causes.

Every 10 seconds two people develop diabetes.

Over 250 million people live with diabetes worldwide. In 2025, this figure will reach 380 million.

Over 500,000 children under age 15 worldwide live with type 1 diabetes.

More than 200 children a day develop type 1 diabetes.

In developing countries, close to 75,000 children live with diabetes in desperate circumstances.

Type 1 diabetes is increasing fastest in pre-school children, at a rate of 5% each year.

Type 2 diabetes has been reported in children as young as eight.

Type 2 diabetes affects children in both developed and developing countries.

A few reasons why we’re here today

World diabetes Day is an action-oriented campaign in support of people affected by diabetes around the world. The campaign is inspired by issues of paramount importance to people with diabetes and their families. Here are some of the stories that motivate us. (All names in the stories below have been changed to protect the identities of the individuals involved. If you have a story to share, send it to the World Diabetes Day team: wdd@idf.org).

It is phenomenal.

Your First Year With Diabetes is essentially a month by month guide letting you know exactly what you should be doing and how.

Diabetes can be overwhelming and the first 12 months can be particularly rough to go through. There are so many things to be considered, so many plans to follow, and so much of your lifestyle that needs changing. It can leave you feeling that it is an impossible feat.

Your First Year With Diabetes gives you detailed advice, tips and tricks that are meant to make it possible for you to make small, attainable lifestyle changes that when added up will transform diabetes into a manageable disease.

Some of the issues that Your First Year With Diabetes addresses are:

Day 1: Mind Matters - explains how to mentally approach a diagnoses of diabetes by re-framing one’s mindset.

Day 2: Diagnosis Diabetes - clarifies the various types of diabetes and the physiological implications of each on the body.

Day 3: Eat Wisely - emphasizes the importance of a health diet and covers the fundamental rules of eating well.

Day 4: Get Active - discusses the role and value of exercise to help manage diabetes.

Day 5: Check Glucose - describes the different kinds of glucose tests available, how they work, and to choose which one might be appropriate.

Day 6: A Tough Pill to Swallow - addresses the initial decition to take medication in order to manage diabetes and its basic role on a day-to-day basis.

Day 7: Your Safety Net - encourages the reader to establish a preliminary network of support people to help share the burden of diabetes.

This book is also filled with charts, illustrations, and hundreds of questions and answers. If you or someone you love is newly diagnosed with diabetes OR needs to get themselves back on track with the basics of diabetes management, Your First Year With Diabetes is the book for them.

It is phenomenal.
Your First Year With Diabetes is essentially a month by month guide letting you know exactly what you should be doing and how.

New diagnoses of type 2 diabetes rose from 4.8 per 1,000 people from 1995 to 1997 to 9.1 per 1,000 people from 2005 to 2007. These new cases mirror the increase in obesity rates, and obesity is a leading cause of the blood sugar disease, officials said.

“The risk factors for type 2 diabetes include obesity and inactivity, and we know the South has a high prevalence of both obesity and physical inactivity when compared to the other regions in the United States,” said study author Karen Kirtland, a data analyst in the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Division of Diabetes Translation.

“The message that we want to get out is to promote lifestyle interventions for people who are at risk for diabetes,” Kirtland said. “People who are at risk for the disease may be able to delay it or prevent it by losing weight, being physically active and making healthy food choices.”

For the study, published in the Oct. 31 issue of the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, Kirtland’s group used the CDC’s Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System to collect data on new diabetes cases in 33 states that reported data for both time periods.

The researchers said the state-by-state breakdown, the first of its kind, found that new cases of diabetes ranged from a low of five per 1,000 people in Minnesota to 12.7 per 1,000 in West Virginia. The territory of Puerto Rico had the largest number of new cases at 12.8 per 1,000 people.

The highest numbers of new type 2 diabetes cases were in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and West Virginia, the researchers found.

An estimated 23.6 million American adults and children have diabetes, but almost one-quarter of them are unaware they have the disease. In 90 percent to 95 percent of cases, people have type 2 disease.

Dr. David L. Katz, director of the Yale University School of Medicine’s Prevention Research Center, said reversing the obesity epidemic is key to cutting the rate of type 2 diabetes.

“We have known for some time that type 2 diabetes is a worsening epidemic in the United States and much of the world,” Katz said. “We now have evidence that the rate at which new cases of diabetes are developing is also increasing.”

Katz noted that southern states tend to have more poorer people than other sections of the country, a statistic that could contribute to the greater number of new diabetes cases in that region. “This is unsurprising, as obesity and poverty are strongly associated, and obesity is the predominant risk factor for type 2 diabetes,” he said.

The new report could have frightening implications for future generations of Americans, Katz said. “With the entire adult population of the United States projected to be overweight or obese by 2048, should current trends persist, diabetes is a clear and present danger to us all. That threat will persist and worsen, until we resolve to turn back the tide of epidemic obesity,” he said.

As the number of type 2 diabetes cases increase, so does the cost of treating the disease. Reporting in the Oct. 27 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine, researchers said the overall cost of drugs for type 2 diabetes almost doubled between 2001 and 2007. Yet, it’s not clear if newer drugs improve patient care and results, the researchers said.

Type 2 diabetes is a lifelong disease caused by the body’s inability to properly use the hormone insulin to transport sugar from the blood to cells for use as energy. Blacks, Hispanics, Native Americans and Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders are more prone to type 2 diabetes, as are people with a family history of the disease, according to the National Institutes of Health.

It is probably most renowned for being a supplement used for bodybuilders and weight trainers as it is an excellent source of protein. Whey protein is not only of benefit to bodybuilders and weight trainers but also to sufferers of conditions such as cancer sufferers, people who are overweight and to Diabetic sufferers.

How can it benefit Diabetic sufferers?

As mentioned already, whey protein is the best natural source of protein. Protein can become an element lacking in some Diabetic’s diets, as a result of their dietary alterations. Whey protein also lowers levels of blood glucose and this is thought to happen because higher protein levels stimulate Insulin production from the Pancreas.

This particular element is of no benefit to Insulin dependent Diabetics however, because they have no Insulin production to stimulate. The other elements can help though but as with any dietary change for Diabetic’s, blood glucose levels need to be closely monitored. It is also important to view the amount of protein per serving as this can vary from brand to brand.

In addition to its direct effect on Diabetes, whey protein is also useful in blood pressure control and weight management. These are two problems commonly encountered by diabetics. Whey releases appetite-suppressing hormones in the body, therefore reducing the need to ’snack’ between main meals. Whey is also quite naturally filling, and so if taken as a ’snack’ meal itself, it can prove not only healthier than fatty snacks but it will also leave you full until your next main meal.

Whey protein and Diabetes are a good combination but please consult your medical practitioner before undergoing any changes to your diet just to be safe and whey protein powder, nor any other supplement, should replace any medication you are prescribed.

I hope this has been of some use to you and I thank you for reading.
Here’s the test you should be sure your Doctor runs for you.

What if by running the right tests, your physician could determine not only where your diabetes stands right now, but also whether it is progressing or reversing?

Stuart Seale, MD, Medical Director at Lifestyle Center of America and author of the book The 30-Day Diabetes Miracle, has outlined three important tests your doctor needs to do for you and why each test is crucial:

Lipid Profile

If you have diabetes and do not get a yearly lipid profile check up, be SURE to ask your doctor about it. This test measures the levels of total cholesterol, HDL (good) cholesterol, LDL (bad) cholesterol and triglycerides. Test results will indicate if you’re at risk for artery blockage. The most common artery blockage in the US (and the leading cause of death) leads to heart attacks. Another risk is stroke. Sixty five percent of those with diabetes will die of a heart attack or stroke. Ideal results are:

a. Total Cholesterol - less than 150 mg%
b. LDL Cholesterol - Less than 70 mg%
c. Total Cholesterol : HDL Cholesterol Ratio - 3:1 or less

1/3 of heart attacks happen when one’s cholesterol is between 150 - 180 mg%. So if your numbers are in that range (especially if above it), use the principles in The 30-Day Diabetes Miracle to lower them.

Fasting Serum Insulin and Blood Sugar Levels

You may have already had one of the tests done. However, the combination of the two is used to calculate insulin resistance, and that is key to stopping the progression of diabetes. Insulin resistance increases the risk of strokes and heart attacks, can damage the pancreas, eyes and nerve endings, and is a precursor to type 2 diabetes. This test is important in knowing whether your body is getting more resistant to insulin or not. Our book covers the topic of insulin resistance and ways to reverse it. Because most physicians do not run the tests simultaneously, they may not know how to calculate the results. You may want to consider an evaluation by a physician at Lifestyle Center of America.

25-hydroxy Viamin D level

Most adults have suboptimal levels of Vitamin D. (anything less than 40 ng/ml of 25-hydroxyl Vitamin D) Suboptimal levels will put you at risk of developing type 1 and type 2 diabetes; depression; psoriasis; and cancers of the skin, colon, breast, prostate, ovaries, and lymph glands. Other manifestations of vitamin D deficiency include osteoporosis, high blood pressure, and multiple sclerosis. Vitamin D deficiency can lead to lack of energy which is prevalent in people with diabetes. Be sure to ask your doctor for the 25-hydroxy, not the 1,25-hydroxyl Vitamin D test, as the second test is not completely accurate. The most effective way to treat Vitamin D deficiency is with a supplement such as cholecalciferol.

The three powerful tests outlined above can help you and your physician stop the progression of your diabetes.

The results can outline areas of improvement. But it is up to you to make changes that will stop diabetes in its tracks and start reversing its progress. The 30-Day Diabetes Miracle is a great tool to get you started right at home.

ABC News: Stars Battling Diabetes is piece on the ABC News site which spotlights 14 celebrities throughout history which have battled diabetes. The site gives a picture of the celebrity along with a brief history of when they were diagnosed with diabetes.

One celebrity’s story really popped out from the rest… this celebrity claims to have cured type 1 diabetes.

Halle Berry has made claims that she was able to cure herself of type 1 diabetes. How did she do this? By weening herself off of insulin. Gosh, it’s so easy. How did all of those doctors miss the cure? Just ween the patient off of insulin. It makes sense.

Except that type 1 diabetics do not produce insulin and so once you slowly weened down their insulin dose to zero…they would die. Except for that little detail I would say that Halle Berry is onto something here.

So what was the response to Halle Berry’s statement from doctors in this country? Impossible, type 1 diabetes has no cure. It is possible, the doctors say, that Halle Berry actually had type 2 diabetes which a person can overcome. If she was smart enough to figure out how to cure diabetes, wouldn’t she be smart enough to know which type she had? You would think.

Other than the claims of curing type 1 diabetes, the ABC piece was great. It is pretty interesting to find out some of the celebrities which live with diabetes and some of the things that they have done to support awareness of this disease. Some of the celebrities on the list include:

Halle Berry - Self proclaimed diabetes curer

Delta Burke - Leader of the Let’s Talk Campaign

Dick Clark - Strives to raise awareness of the link between diabetes and heart disease

Mary Tyler Moore - Chairperson of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation

Della Reese - Spokesperson for Glaxo Smith Kline’s Stronger Than Diabetes

Diabetes has been around for a long time but since the year 2000, it has caught the attention of everyone in this country as becoming an epidemic. The purpose of American Diabetes Month is to raise awareness not only about the epidemic we are dealing with but also to show that with education diabetes can be avoided.

There is no shortage of self help books and programs out there today but they are definitely not all created equally. Self help programs from Tools To Life stands apart from the crowd.

The first clue that Tools To Life is a little different from all the other self help sites out there is the fact that it is 100% free and will always be free. Tools To Life has dedicated thousands of hours to creating the tools that will allow people to change their lives.

Not only does Tools To Life provide inspirational motivation through programs, articles, and group challenges they also offer life coaching support groups that include a whole community of members lending their support.

Tools To Life was created by Coach Devlyn Steele who through years of successful business consulting, one-to-one counseling, the hosting of two successful radio shows, and his own overcoming of a learning disability, has been able to study both how the brain works and the habits of the most successful people in history.

Coach Steele took this knowledge and created TOOLS which he has tested on thousands of individuals from every walk of life. It was this creation that evolved into Tools To Life.

Among the Tools To Life programs are the Tools to Optimal Health program which is not your average exercise and diet program. Tools to Optimal Health was created by Naturopathic Physician Dr. Carlos Santo. It is a model of healthy living for anyone and everyone that is trying to learn about and work towards their own optimal health.

The Tools To Life Program, which was created by Coach Steele, is a 90 day program perfect for anyone who has been meaning to make changes to their life and uplift their sense of hope and empowerment. It’s full of interactive reading and media actions that move you in the direction of the life you want.

The most outstanding feature of Tools To Life has to be the community support that is available. You have access to support from other members that are like minded and share common goals in life. You are able to discuss the programs that you all are involved in and see how they are affecting others.

In my opinion, support is the main key to making any type of life changes. Tools to Life obviously shares the same opinion as they have created a place where people get the tools they need to learn to change their life and the support they need to actually make it happen.
