Child Diabetes by the Numbers

Medical writer Honor Whiteman has written a compelling primer on child diabetes for Medical News Today documenting the incidence, morbidity, mortality, signs and symptoms of diabetes among children and adolescents.

Here's a look at her article, Child Diabetes: Could You Spot the Signs? by the numbers.

208,000

Estimated number of children and adolescents in the United States with either type 1 or type 2 diabetes.

80

Percentage of children under the age of 2 years who, when finally correctly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, have developed diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA).

46.3

Percentage of misdiagnosed kids with type 1 diabetes whom doctors incorrectly diagnose with a respiratory system infection.

16

Percentage of kids with type 1 diabetes who are misdiagnosed when they first see a doctor for the condition.

14

Percentage of parents in a UK survey who were able to correctly identify the four chief symptoms of type 1 diabetes in children.

4

Number of primary symptoms parents should learn to be able to identify diabetes in children. To the point, Whiteman notes that Diabetes UK's campaign to make people more aware of the disease is built around the four T's:

  • Toilet - using the toilet frequently, heavier diapers in babies or bedwetting from a previously dry child
  • Thirsty - drinking more fluids than usual but being unable to quench thirst
  • Tired - feeling more tired than usual
  • Thinner - weight loss
