Specific Foods Identified As Preventing Inflammation

Certain foods have been discovered to fight inflammation, according to a new study conducted by University of Liverpool Institute of Ageing and Chronic Disease researchers.

While it does occur naturally in the body, an abundance of inflammation or having it for too long can contribute to diabetes, cancer, heart disease and Alzheimer’s disease, among other conditions. Researchers now believe that foods rich in polyphenols - such as fruits and vegetables - could help to protect the body against inflammation and recurring disease.

“The results of our study suggest that polyphenols derived from onions, turmeric, red grapes, green tea and açai berries may help reduce the release of pro-inflammatory mediators in people at risk of chronic inflammation,” said Sian Richardson, lead author of the study.

Polyphenols for good health

Previous studies have established polyphenols as a key component in preventing degenerative diseases. However, the positive health benefits of polyphenols hinge on how much is consumed, and researchers are still examining the different potencies of them.

While limiting inflammation is important for people of all ages, researchers believe that keeping it in check is especially vital for older people.

"[They] are more susceptible to chronic inflammation and as such they may benefit from supplementing their diets with isorhamnetin, resveratrol, curcumin and vanillic acid or with food sources that yield these bioactive molecules," said Richardson.
