European Medicines Agency
The European Medicines Agency suspended the use of Avandia in 2010. It remained on the market in the United States under a very strict use policy only type 2 diabetics who were unable to control their diabetes with any other type of medication were allowed to take Avandia. These diabetics were made aware of the possible side effects of the medication and given the option to try other medications and combinations of other medications. Europe is not the only country who has banned Avandia New Zealand gave the pharmaceutical companies and doctors until April 29, 2011 to remove the medication from the market.

“Given that there are about 3.8 million prescriptions for rosiglitazone dispensed annually in the United States, the effect on public health may be considerable. Compared with pioglitazone, rosiglitazone was associated with a significant increased risk of heart attack (16%), congestive heart failure (23%), and mortality (14%).” Pioglitazone also known as Actos is a medication in the same class as Avandia and the statistics show just how unsafe or dangerous Avandia can be.
Conclusion
It is only a matter of time before Avandia is banned in the United States and other countries as well. Doctors are urging their diabetic patients to try other medications before the ban takes place.
