Wash Those Hands before Testing Your Blood Sugar

According to a new study published in Diabetes Care, your finger-stick blood glucose test may be "abnormal and or significantly high" if you test your blood sugar after handling fruit without thoroughly washing your hands.

Tokyo Study

A Tokyo study, titled "Glucose Monitoring After Fruit Peeling: Pseudohyperglycemia When Neglecting Hand Washing Before Fingertip Blood Sampling," tested ten non-diabetic people who had normal blood sugar glucose levels of approximately 90 mg/dL. The volunteers were asked to peel an orange, a kiwi, or a grape. After they performed the task they then tested their blood sugar without washing their hands, their blood sugar level produced results of 170, 180, and 360 mg/dL.

“Even after they swabbed their test finger with alcohol five times, the meter results were inaccurately high. It was only after a thorough hand washing with tap water that they got an accurate result from their meter.”

Conclusion

The researchers concluded, to avoid inaccurate readings of a diabetics blood glucose using a portable device, the hands should be washed before using a blood sugar testing device to ensure an accurate reading.
